Difference Between Fire-Rated Doors and Security Doors

16 Sep, 2025

Fire-rated doors, installed in fire-resistant bulkheads, are designed to meet the same level of fire separation requirements. The key difference between fire-rated doors and security doors lies in their primary function: security doors are mainly designed to resist prying and offer excellent sealing performance. Typically, once closed, these doors cannot be opened from the outside without a key. However, the filling material inside the door panel is not fire-resistant. Although fire-rated doors are also made of steel, their door panels are filled with fire-resistant materials, and the thickness of the steel plates must meet specific requirements. Standard steel doors, on the other hand, are ordinary steel doors with some features but relatively weak prying resistance. Most small local processing factories produce this type of door.

Fire-rated doors are not solely required to be fire-resistant; they must also meet certain anti-prying standards in the following aspects:

  1. The door frame must be 2.0 mm thick, and both the inner and outer steel plates of the door leaf must be 0.8 mm thick.

  2. The lock must have anti-prying functionality, meaning it should include both an angled latch and a square deadbolt. However, top and bottom bolts (天地锁) are not permitted.

  3. Both the lock and peephole must have fire protection test reports. Class B fire-rated entry doors may be equipped with a door viewer, while Class A doors are not allowed to have one.

  4. During inspection and acceptance, the supplier must provide the following documents:

    • Fire-type certification

    • Fire test report

    • Test report for metal entry doors

    • Fire test reports for the locks and peephole
